The Hippocratic Oath is a Greek medical text that requires new doctors to swear to uphold ethical standards. It is one of the most well-known Greek medical texts. 

What does the oath include? 

  • The oath includes promises to uphold the health and well-being of patients
  • To respect the dignity and autonomy of patients
  • To respect the confidentiality of patients
  • To provide care in accordance with good medical practice
  • To share medical knowledge for the benefit of patients
  • To not use medical knowledge to violate human rights
  • To treat patients with compassion and integrity
  • To minimize suffering when a cure is not possible
